Hard wax is applied thick, allowed to harden, and then gently removed without a strip. Soft wax is applied thin and removed with a strip. At Holladay Spa, we use hard wax for sensitive areas (face, underarms, bikini) because it adheres to hair, not skin—making it less irritating. Soft wax can be used for larger areas like legs, but hard wax gives a gentler, more comfortable experience where your skin is delicate.

For the best results, hair should be about ¼ inch long—usually about 2 weeks of growth after your last shave. Too short and the wax can’t grab; too long and it can be more uncomfortable.

For the best experience, make sure your hair is at least ¼ inch long (about 2 weeks of growth). Gently exfoliate the day before to loosen dead skin and lift hairs, but avoid harsh scrubs the day of your appointment. Don’t apply heavy lotions, oils, or self-tanner right before your wax, as they can interfere with results. If you’re worried about discomfort, you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30 minutes beforehand—but most clients find it’s not necessary.

It’s normal to see a little redness or sensitivity right after your appointment—this usually fades within a few hours. Avoid heat (hot showers, saunas, workouts) and friction for 24 hours. Keep skin moisturized, and exfoliate gently between visits to help prevent ingrowns.

Most clients enjoy 3–4 weeks of smooth skin before regrowth becomes noticeable. Regular waxing can slow down regrowth and make hair finer over time. Generally clients return for their next appointment between 4-6 weeks after their last appointment.

Waxing is safe for most people, but there are a few exceptions. You should avoid waxing if you are currently taking Accutane (isotretinoin), using prescription retinoids (like Retin-A, Tazorac, or Differin) on the area to be waxed, or have recently had a chemical peel, laser treatment, or sunburn. These can make skin too fragile for waxing. If you have certain medical conditions, are on antibiotics, or use blood-thinning medications, check with your provider before scheduling.
